Pull-type solenoids in a range to meet tons of applications

Magnetic Sensor Systems (MSS) has released their S-20-100X model of high-efficiency, low-cost Pull Type Tubular Solenoids (1 in. diameter x 2 in. long). Their S-20-100X series features 18 different solenoids to select from based on the voltage, duty cycle, force, and stroke requirement of the user. MSS solenoid coils typically use Class F 23- to 40-AWG windings with Class A insulation for better protection of the solenoid during longer duty cycles. New compact touchless linear position sensors

The TFD Series of touchless linear position sensors from Novotechnik provides wear-free operation in tight spaces. The TFD-4000 Series uses a magnetic position marker to provide a touchless measurement range of 0 to 14, 24, or 50 mm -- depending on model. These sensors make measurements through air and non-magnetic materials. Sensing direction can be either parallel or perpendicular to mounting holes. Applications include textile, packaging, and sheet metal machinery; medical applications; marine; mobile engine management; and construction, agricultural, and forestry machinery.

New Wifi Sensors connect directly to cloud servers and iPhone/Android platforms

Spanish company Libelium, a designer of wireless sensor networks for Smart Cities solutions has created a new Wifi module for its Waspmote sensor platform. The new radio module adds an extra layer of intelligence to the nodes that allows them to send the collected data to any Web server in the cloud. The Wifi sensor nodes will also be capable of sending data to any iPhone or Android device nearby by creating direct links with them.

This Wifi radio extends the possibilities of "The Internet of Things" to iPhone/Android apps developers as it completes the current connectivity possibilities (already covered by ZigBee, Bluetooth and 3G/GPRS), allowing for the first time direct communications between the sensors and the smartphones – even without an intermediate router.

Libelium's new Wifi sensors enable system integrators to easily create intelligent monitoring systems for the urban environment.

"Now sensor nodes can connect directly to cloud servers using a standard protocol such as HTTP," says Libelium's CTO David Gascón. "This is a milestone to ensure a quick spread of Internet of Things applications, since sensor devices may connect automatically to existing Wifi networks deployed in cities or even to our own home routers, making new deployments an easy task."

These new Wifi sensors are also capable of using the secure version of the standard Web protocol HTTPS, which ensures the privacy of the information sent – a major concern when deploying wireless sensor networks in cities. They can also create TCP and UDP connections to enable developers to design their own communication framework between the sensor nodes and the cloud servers.

Libelium provides an intuitive and open-source programming API and complete documentation with examples in order to help developers to start working with the platform. Demo applications for iPhone and Android are also available for free, in order to easily test the new Wifi sensor capabilities from any smartphone.
